NUJ TASKS JOURNALISTS TO ADHERE TO PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

The Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, Mr Deji Olumoye, on Friday urged Journalists to be committed to the ethics of the profession. Olumoye, who stated this during the election and inauguration of new executive members of the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), stressed the need for journalists to be factual before going to the press.
``As trained journalists, we should be careful of what write. We should be sure of the facts before going to the press. We should not send hear say to members of the public as story. We should be guided by the ethics of the profession.
``As leaders of the union in Lagos, we will not allow members to rubbish the union reputation by sending misleading story. We would ensure that members are not use as instruments in the hands of politicians and others,’’ Olumoye said.

Four days after he was abducted by four armed gunmen, the Ejigbo Local Council Development Chairman, Kehinde Bamigbetan, Saturday night returned unhurt to the arms of his wife, family and well wishers. The victim who was kidnapped on Tuesday night  few meters from his residence in Ejigbo, finally regained his freedom at 11.45pm.

Like the sphinx which rises from its ashes, the victim returned alone unexpectedly when hopes were fading for some and strong for others especially the wife who said she did not stop believing in his safe return. Her optimism paid off.

Some hoodlums weekend, attacked fire fighters who were  struggling to put out an inferno which razed down about three buildings, killed one and left several others with varying degrees of injuries at the Apapa area of Lagos.
The inferno which occurred at Agbe Street, Olodi-Apapa, on sunday at about 7.30pm, was said to have exacerbated when the hoodlums fought off the firefighters. It was gathered that the attack has increased the toll of such assaults to three in three weeks, thereby inciting panic amongst emergency personnel as regards their safety.

Confirming the incident, Information Officer, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South-west, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye said the such acts have been on the increase lately.

Britain Promises to Support Maritime Security in W’Africa

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock, has promised that his country will support Africa’s capacity in maritime security through advising, training and equipping of local security forces on the continent.
The envoy spoke at a conference on West African Maritime Security and Development held by the Royal Institute of International Affairs of London (Chatham House) and the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos Saturday.

US Report Uncovers Massive Corruption in Nigeria

A new report submitted to the United States Congress by the Secretary of State John Kerry has alleged massive corruption at all levels of the Nigerian government. The document titled:  "Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2012" was prepared by the Department of State using information from US embassies and consulates abroad, foreign government officials, non-governmental and international organisations, and published reports.
