Nasarawa Massacre: Police Dole out N1m Each to Bereaved Families

It is perhaps a new dawn in the police force as compensation packages were doled out at the weekend to families who had lost their breadwinners during the massacre of policemen in Nasarawa State recently. This is even distinct from their formal terminal entitlements.

The bereaved families of the over 60 police officers of the Mobile Police Force, Squadron 38, who were killed in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, by the deadly militia group, Ombatse, have been given N1 million each as a prelude to the compensation process.

Italian prosecutors on Monday called for a six-year jail sentence and a lifetime ban on holding public office for former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, charged with abuse of office and paying for sex with a minor.

The 76-year-old billionaire media tycoon and centre-right senator is accused of paying for sex with Karima El Mahroug, better known by her stage name 'Ruby the Heartstealer', when she was under 18, during the now notorious "bunga bunga" parties at his villa at Arcore near Milan in 2010.

Police Raid Enugu ‘Baby Factory,’ Rescue Six Pregnant Girls

Operatives of the anti-kidnapping unit of the Enugu State Police Command Tuesday raided a baby factory in the state and rescued six pregnant young girls allegedly detained by operators of the illegal home for the purpose of making babies.

The young girls who gave their names as Chioma Eze, Amarachi Okoro, Gloria Okoye, Uzoamaka Lawrence, Nneji Faith and Akpan Juliana are between the ages of 16 and 17 years. A release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Ebere Amaraizu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, disclosed that the baby factory is located at No 7 Anyansi Lane, Ogui, Enugu.

The US ambassador to Russia has been summoned over Moscow's claims it caught a CIA agent disguised in a blond wig trying to recruit one of its intelligence officers. Ambassador Michael McFaul entered the Russian foreign ministry headquarters in central Moscow on Wednesday morning and left half an hour later without saying a word to a swarm of journalists waiting outside, reports Sky News.

US diplomat Ryan Fogle, who is accused of working as a spy, was detained by Russian security officials on Tuesday. Moscow claimed he was caught red-handed, carrying specialist technical equipment, disguises including wigs and sunglasses, a large sum of money, and written instructions for recruiting a Russian citizen as a spy.

Delhi Gang Rape Suspect 'Beaten and Poisoned

A suspect in the fatal gang rape of a student in India is in a critical condition after allegedly being beaten and poisoned in prison. The defence lawyer for Vinay Sharma said that the defendant was taken to a Delhi hospital on Tuesday after being assaulted by fellow inmates, reports Sky News.

A.P.Singh told the AFP news agency: "He was vomiting blood and running a very high fever. "He was also suffering from chest pains. He is in a very critical condition." The lawyer claimed that the vomiting was the result of slow poisoning of Sharma's food over a period of several weeks.

US Kidnap Accused to Plead Innocent

The US man accused of imprisoning three women for about a decade in his house in Ohio will plead not guilty to all charges, his lawyers say. Ariel Castro, aged 52, is charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape.

The women were abducted at different times and held in Castro's house in Cleveland. One of them escaped earlier this month and raised the alarm, reports the BBC. "He's not a monster and he shouldn't be demonised," said lawyer Jaye Schlachet.

Rivers PDP Crisis: Explosion Rocks Obio/Akpor Council

A mid-morning explosion rocked a section of the secretariat of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council in Rivers State Tuesday, sending jitters across the state as the crisis rocking the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepens. This came less than 24 hours after a Port Harcourt High Court ordered the police to unseal the premise of the secretariat.

The explosion at the secretariat of Obio/Akpor Council happened just as the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Otelemaba Amachree, warned that the state was heading for anarchy.

46 Police, 10 SSS Officers Confirmed Killed in Nasarawa

Security agencies Tuesday confirmed 46 police officers and men as well as 10 operatives of the State Security Services (SSS) killed in the May 7 attack in Nasarawa State by members of the Ombatse cult. The official casualty figure was disclosed Tuesday at a press briefing in Abuja by the Joint Security Information Forum on the security situation in the country.

Present at the news briefing, which held at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), were officials of the army, navy, air force, DHQ, the police and the SSS. Concerned about the spate of killings of security agents, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has called on the federal government to take urgent steps to stop their senseless killings by bands of militiamen in various parts of the country.
