The Deputy Controller of Sokoto State Central Prisons, Usman Zaki Gwandu, was yesterday killed in Sokoto metropolis by unidentified gunmen. The Police Public Relations Officer, Sani Salisu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who confirmed the incident said the prison boss was shot by the assailants and eventually died on the spot. Salisu, however, stated that the police had commenced investigation into the incident with a view to unravelling those behind Gwandu’s death.

"We have commenced investigation on the matter in order to trace the assailants who perpetrated this dastardly act," Salisu said.

THISDAY checks revealed that the late Gwandu was gruesomely murdered around 10 p.m. close to the second gate of the state Polytechnic while driving alone in his car on his way home.
THISDAY learnt that his vehicle was reportedly shattered with bullets while the motive behind the attack could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
Similarly, the remains of the slain deputy controller had been deposited at the Usman Danfodiyo Teaching Hospital Sokoto, ahead of his burial at Gwandu, his hometown in Kebbi State.
However, a source at the Polytechnic who pleaded anonymity, told THISDAY that the residents of the area were thrown into pandemonium when they heard several gunshots.
"We heard the gunshots but nobody was courageous enough to come out due to fear of the unknown,” he said.
