Lagos Airport Robbery: Police Arrest Seven, Recover Weapons, Charms

Barely a month after some dare-devil armed robbery group carted away over N600million at the Murtala Mohammed Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos and killed two policemen, the Lagos State Command yesterday paraded seven suspects in connection with the operation.

The police also recovered five AK47 rifles, four dynamites, two locally made pistols , 64 AK47 rifle magazines all loaded with 30 rounds totaling 1920 live ammunition, charms and a Toyota Sienna bus with registration number BDG918AG.

The suspects who were identified as Ibikunle Olanrewaju John, Atiba Adeniyi, Ibrahim Abdullahi, Kazeem Aderibigbe, Saheed Adekunle, Christian Joshua and Saheed Okunola, confessed that they each took home N45million as their share from the loot.

However, THISDAY gathered that some of the gang members who were identified as Ifeanyi Douglas, Felix Sunday, one Asiwaju and Shina Aremu are still at large.

Confirming the arrests, the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, said after the robbery, the commissioner of police, airport command, had forwarded the documents obtained from one of the robbers, Teslim Okunola, who was shot dead to the command.

Armed with the information gotten from the documents, the officer in charge of the state Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), SP Abba Kyari, was said to have trailed and arrested the suspects at their hideout deep inside the forest at Agoro Village in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

During interrogation, the suspects were said to have confessed to several armed robbery operations often targeted at banks in Lagos, Ogun, Ondo and Kwara States especially the MMIA robbery which they carted away over N600million.

He said, "The robbers had first raided the MMIA in February and made away with N600million and went back in March 13, to carry out another raid. Our men successful trailed and arrested them."

Manko added that investigations are ongoing to further arrest the fleeing members of the gang who are currently at large.
