Police Arrest Nurse for Setting House help Ablaze


Policemen attached to Bode Thomas Division,  weekend arrested a nurse, Mrs. Nkese Iroakazi, for allegedly setting her 11-year-old house help, Ita Bassey-Eno ablaze at their residence at Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere, Lagos.

The victim who was accused of allegedly stealing a piece of meat from the pot of soup, is currently receiving treatment at the Burns and Trauma centre of the Gbadaga General hospital, where doctors are battling to save her life.


Although Iroakazi reportedly denied the allegation, the victim told police investigators that her mistress had poured kerosine on her before striking a stick of matches.

After she was set ablaze, the victim was said to have  rushed out of the apartment before she slumped on the ground and eyewitness quenched the fire with an  extinguisher.

According to eyewitness account, the victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment because of the degree of damage the flames had exerted on her skin.

The victim was said to have been brought to Lagos last month from Akwa-Ibom last month alongside another girl called Happiness. 

 Police sources said the victim is currently suffering from  95 per cent burns that would  entail some surgeries especially at her private parts which was badly damaged. 

Also, the source said the suspect would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti Yaba, for further investigation.
