EXCLUSIVE: Ikorodu Crisis Claims One

Lagos PRO, Braide

A renewed clash at the Ikorodu area of Lagos State today claimed one life and left several others with varying degree of injuries, as protesters took to the street. The clash which started on Monday snowballed into mayhem when some aggrieved persons took to the streets to register their grouse against the death of a commercial motorcyclist who was shot by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

The policeman who was simply identified simply as Haruna, in company of two of his colleagues, Ayodele and Ismaila, had on Monday stormed the area to arrest defaulters of the state government's ban, which restricts Okada riders from plying about 475 roads in the state.

In an attempt to stop the deceased who was identified as Lekan from escaping, the policeman was said to have shot him at close range, also injuring two other persons including a female pedestrian.

Although the crowd was dispersed, they however regrouped yesterday but this time they stormed the police station in their numbers demanding that the killer cop be brought out to them.

When contacted, the state Police Spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the area has been brought under control through the help of the operatives who were deployed there.

She said, "It is an unfortunate incident that a life was lost but no matter what happens, we are not supposed to take laws into our hands and take to the streets to protest.
