An untimely humanitarian crisis has rocked the once peaceful riverine communities of Delta and Bayelsa and some other states of the nation. The region has been quickly and unduly thrown into chaos within the last few weeks, as floods have ravaged the two states and displaced thousands of residents in the Niger Delta region. A Non-Governmental Organisation, The Dickens Sanomi Foundation gave out a comprehensive funding package worth over N100 million to flood victims in Delta and Bayelsa State, as part of its intervention programme to mitigate the effects of the devastating flood on the people writes LANRE ALFRED.

It all started in a very mundane manner but here is how the story goes:

Our work entails visiting slum neighborhoods most of the time. I have come to discover that no two visits to the same neighbourhood are ever the same. On this particular day in 2009, I went on a field visit to Ikota.

Ikota is a high-density slum neighbourhood situated along Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos. This community plays host to over ten thousand people of which children and women constitute a greater percentage of the population. It is a cultural melting point hosting communities of diverse tribes and nationalities, amongst which are Ibos, Yorubas, Bini, Efik, Itsekiris, Ijaws, as well as Ghanaians.

A play by Emmy Unuja Ikanaba Idegu, a professor at the Department of Theatre and Performing Arts of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, recently thrilled an Israeli audience. This was on Tuesday, October 16, at the ZOA Theatre, 26 Eben-Gevirol Street in Tel Aviv. The play, The Legendary Inikpi was staged as a command performance during the commemoration of the 20th years of the restoration of diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Israel as well as the celebration of Nigeria’s 52nd independence anniversary.
