LASU Murder: Police Comb Hideouts, Arrest 50 Suspects

No fewer than 50 suspects has been arrested by the Area E Command of the Lagos State Police Command, under the command of the Area Commander, Dan Okoro, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, in connection with the death of late Damilola Damoche, a 400 level student of the Lagos State University (LASU).

The deceased who was nurturing his singing career was shot dead last Thursday by suspected cultists in front of the school gate, arousing fear of a reprisal attack from the opposing faction.

Convicted Pension Director Slumps in Court

Convicted pension thief, John Yahaya Yusufu, who is standing trial for alleged false declaration of assets, Monday  slumped in the dock while his trial was in progress before a Federal High Court in Abuja. Soon as the court resumed, Yusufu's lawyer, Mr. Theodore Maiyaki, moved an application seeking bail for the recently convicted pension thief.

The lawyer had  told the court that the offence for which his client was standing trial was ordinarily bailable and that the court was empowered by the law to exercise discretion in granting bail to an accused person and urged that the discretion be exercised in his client's favour.

Eight Houses Sink into Holes in Bayelsa

Eight houses suddenly got swallowed up in holes that caved  in at the weekend in Okoloba community in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Although no casualty was recorded, the entire properties of the people were lost.

Expectedly, the people have started leaving the community in droves.  people woke up to see that two of the houses have disappeared into sinkholes. And while they were yet wondering and pondering on what happened, within a few hours, six other houses including the home of a 69-year old ex-service man sank into holes.

Kwara State CP Shot Dead in Enugu

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police,Chinwike Asadu, was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday night near his home in Enugu state.

His police orderly and driver who were reportedly with him at the time of the incident sustained serious bullet wounds and are said to be lying critically at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu. Vanguard reports that the incident occurred at Amorji Nike, near the densely populated Abakpa Nike area in Enugu East local government area within the state capital at about 10 pm.

Nigerian Army kills 20 Boko Haram members

An army spokesman said the militants were killed as they tried to seize military barracks in the village of Monguno. The attack was repelled. Weapons and ammunition were also seized from the militants. The spokesman made no mention of military casualties.

Boko Haram has been blamed for a series of deadly attacks in northern Nigeria in recent years. The group has not commented on the latest attack in Monguno, about 200km (124 miles) north of the regional capital Maiduguri.

NGF Chairmanship: Northern PDP Governors Dump Amaechi,

Governors elected on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party from the northern states may have finally dumped the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, after several weeks of bickering over the headship of the forum when his tenure ends in May.

The northern states’ PDP governors also rejected the presidency’s choice for the NGF chairmanship, Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State, in favour of a neutral candidate ahead of the election in May to choose a new chairman.

Another Largesse: FG Donates N3bn to Nollywood

In celebration of the Nollywood’s 20th anniversary, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has donated a grant of N3 billion to the industry to be supervised by the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo iweala and Minister of culture, tourism and national orientation, Edem Duke. This announcement was made at the State Banquet hall last night where the President dined with the Nollywood industry. The grant titled “Project Nollywood”  will be commissioned on the first week of April.

Jonathan Pledge to Begin Construction of Lagos to Abidjan Expressway Come 2014

The stretch of international road linking Nigeria’s economic hub, Lagos with Abidjan, the Ivorien capital would commence next year President Goodluck Jonathan intimated Saturday. President Jonathan who disclosed this when he met with Cote d’Ivoire Investors Forum on the sideline of his state visit to that country, also explained that the funding of the project will be sourced from the private sector, development partners and banks, who will get return on their investment by levying tariffs and tolls on users.
