EXCLUSIVE: Police Handle Over 600 Fraud Cases In Six Months

SFU CP, TUNDE OGUNSAKIN
The Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Tunde Ogunsakin, Thursday, disclosed that the unit which was specially established to deal with fraud cases has so far handled over 600 of such cases since January 2013.

The CP, who made this disclosure yesterday in his office at Milverton, Ikoyi, when fielding questions from journalists, added that some of the cases have been seen to a logical conclusion while investigations are ongoing on the rest.

He said despite some of the challenges facing the unit which might sometimes slow the pace of investigation, the operatives in the unit still do their best with the little resources at their disposal.

He also stressed that the unit has recorded a remarkable feat in the last one year through recovery of proceeds of fraud running into billions of naira by freezing the fraudsters’ accounts through judicial process.

On the upcoming workshop tagged 'Corporate Fraud: Insider abuse in financial institutions and the implication on developing economies', Ogunsakin added that in recent times, electronic banking fraud has taken a lead position in all manners of bank fraud cases found in Nigeria.

The event which is billed for July 1-5 at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, is packaged for internal auditors from all the banks in Nigeria as well as operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices  Commission (ICPC) and the State Security Services (SSS).
