The quantity of food served inmates at the Afokang Prison in Calabar South, is decreasing by the day as the number of prisoners continues to increase, the deputy controller of Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) in charge of Prison Formation in Cross River State, Elder L. H. Onu,  has said.

He explained that whereas the quantity of food supplied to the prison has remained the same over the years, the number of inmates has not,  hence the decrease in the ration served and its effect on the prisoners too.
Onu revealed that there were over 1,475 prisoners,  including those awaiting trial in the prison, a number he noted,  was on the high side as compared with the quantity of food supplied by the authorities.

At the office of the chairman of Bakassi Local Government Area, Dr. Ekpo Ekpo Bassey, the deputy controller informed him that there were over 1,000 prisoners with 775 of them awaiting trial for some years now.
This upsurge in the population of prisoners in the Calabar prison, he observed, has adversely affected food supply, including available opportunities in the technical department for the training of inmates on various vocational skills.
He appealed to public individuals, organisations and government at all levels to come to the aid of the prison by donating food items so that the current food shortage does not worsen and cause unpleasant consequences for the Prison Service.
