EXCLUSIVE: Two Feared Dead As Police Engage Robbers in Shootout

Two persons were Sunday feared dead at the Meiran-Ijaiye area of Lagos State, after the rescue patrol team  from the of the police engaged a gang of armed robbers in a shoot-out.

The armed gang had attempted to rob one of the popular pentecostal churches in Lagos located at Olaniyi Close, but their plans were aborted by the  policemen who acting on a tip off stormed the area. 


Sunday's incident has increased the number of churches who were successfully robbed in Lagos within the last three weeks. 

According to eyewitness account, the robbers had engaged the three patrol team that responded to the distress call in a shootout.

Although the gun duel lasted for a few minutes, they were later overpowered by the superior firing power of the police, which left two dead and several others with varying degrees of injuries. 

Police sources said the robbers arrived the church on three motorcycles but for the prompt action of the security men who called in the police, the gang would have been successful.

He said, "One of the church security men was fast enough to contact the Meiran Police Divisional Headquarters, who alerted the Lagos State Police Command control room. 

"The control room had relayed the message calling on all patrol vans to surround the whole of Meran and ensure that the robbery did not take place. At the moment, we are still on the trail of the fleeing members of the gang."

Confirming the incident, the state Police Spokesperson, Nogozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the planned armed robbery attack was foiled due to the sheer gallantry of the officers.

She said, "The swift response of the police patrol teams made it impossible for the armed robbers to attack the church members who were having a special program."
