Research shows mapping is creating jobs and driving global economic growth. Twenty years ago, we used paper maps and printed guides to help us navigate the world. Today, the most advanced digital mapping technologies—satellite imagery, GPS devices, location data and of course Google Maps<http://maps.google.com/>—are much more accessible. This increase and growth in mapping technology is improving lives and helping businesses in Nigeria realize untold efficiencies

Today, more Nigerian businesses now consider map listing as a mandatory. In the last quarter of 2012 alone, 14 banks across Nigeria took their branches and ATMs locations closer to Nigerians by listing them on Google Maps.  As we speak, there are over 10,000 bank branches, ATMs and POS outlet locations listed on Google Maps.

This story fascinates but saddens me. Reacting to one of my articles, a young, wealthy Nigerian said: “To be honest, I am making a lot of money in Nigeria. I have friends in government. I get juicy contracts and make handsome margins. I have houses in Lekki, London and New York. My house in Lekki has a high fence, security gates, security doors, security wires and security guards on duty 24/7. My house in London has no fence, no security doors, no guards. Yet I feel more secure in my London home than in my Lekki house.” He said the inequalities in Nigeria are such that “the wealthy live like prisoners… the rest of the society resents them”.

Dear Sir, let me start by expressing my deepest sympathy at the ordeal our Police men and women face in the course of their duties in Nigeria. I knew you to be one of our finest officers during a brief encounter I had with you at the Louis Edet House in Abuja about four years ago. At that time, you were of the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police but I was very impressed by your charisma and carriage. You did not bear the mien of a typical Nigerian Police officer. You spoke eloquently and intelligently. I was happy when your name was announced as the Inspector-General by President Goodluck Jonathan. But I was also sad at the same time.
