Lagos Crash: Another Survivor Dies




One of the six remaining survivors of the Associated Airlines plane crash in Lagos on Thursday died Saturday, despite concerted efforts to save his life.
The death of the man, who was identified as Samson Hassan, has increased the total death toll from the plane crash to 15, with five survivors still battling for their lives.
The plane with 20 passengers on board was conveying the remains of former Ondo State governor Olusegun Agagu to his state for burial when it crashed few minutes after take-off in Lagos.

Use of Old Boats Banned in Niger

The use of old boats in carrying passengers to destinations has been placed on ban in Niger State. The ban was due to the mishap involving two boats in which more than 18 lives were lost at Kokoli village, Agwarra area of Niger state.
 The spokesman for the state government, Mr Danladi Ndaebo, explained that the action was intended to ensure that old and rickety boats do not continue to  waste valuable lives in the riverine areas of the state.

Amnesty Office Raises Alarm over Plot by Militants to Invade Abuja




The Presidential Amnesty Office has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by a group of youths from some Niger Delta states to again invade the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in protest over their non-inclusion in the Federal Government’s Amnesty Programme for ex-agitators.

The Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Iyiola Akande Friday said emergency services responded quickly to the Associated Airlines plane crash on Thursday because the aircraft had emergency beacon.

He said the speed at which the emergency services responded was responsible for the reduction in casualty figure “because the airline had the emergency beacon, which alerts responders about an aircraft in distress.”

Nigeria, US, UK joint Military Training on Counter Terrorism Begins




The military, in conjunction with special forces from the UK, U.S., Spain and Netherland have begun a joint training to enhance its capacity to combat terrorism in the county’s maritime environment.
Rear Adm. Babalola Ogunjimi, the Nigerian Navy’s Chief of Training and Operations, who stated this at news conference on Sunday in Abuja, said that the exercise would involve personnel.
