Ribadu's Spits Back Abati, 'You Are Desperate'

A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu has described the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Goodluck Jonathan, Reuben Abati as a desperate personality, a fraud and someone who lacks ‘the simplest level of media literacy.’

Reacting to a statement credited to Mr Abati, in which the presidential spokesman referred to his views at a lecture in Kaduna last weekend as hypocritical and self-serving, Mr Ribadu accused the presidential aide of standing on “crooked crutches of rehashed falsehoods fabricated by corrupt politicians.”

Mr Ribadu, at a lecture in Kaduna on Saturday, was said to have declared that Nigeria is a “sinking ship” under President Jonathan with the yearnings of the masses being neglected by a tyrannical leadership. Mr Abati had on Monday released a statement where he faulted Mr Ribadu’s views describing them as hypocritical and self-serving.

UNILAG Students Protest High Cost of Items in School

Students of University Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka Campus, Yaba, yesterday took to the streets of the campus in protest of the alleged high cost of food and other items by the accredited vendors.

The students said the prices of the items on the campus were more expensive that what is obtainable outside the campus, adding that ordinarily, it should be the other way round.

Fashola Signs Cremation Bill Into Law

Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state, on Monday signed the Cremation Bill into law, allowing residents to burn their dead if they so wish. The new law also empowers  medical practitioners, with government approval, to cremate abandoned and unclaimed corpses after a reasonable period of time has been given as notice. Fashola said the law was enacted to provide more choices in a growing global state and accommodate the different beliefs of residents.

Naval Officer’s Wife Escapes Assassination Attempt Inside Church

The wife of Rear Admiral Ameen Ikioda, the Moderator at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, near Jos, on Sunday escaped an assassination attempt by an unknown person during a church service at Apapa, Lagos. Ikioda, the immediate past Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, was said to be currently away on an overseas tour with course participants.

The Director of Naval Information, Commodore Kabir Aliyu, who confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone in Lagos, however, could not immediately provide details of how the incident happened.

The speed was unusual.  In a moment it arrived at the gate and then headed straight to the emergency ward. Inside the ambulance, a man wrapped in white cloth lay on the stretcher with two nurses at the back of the ambulance with him. After it had meandered through the roads within, it pulled to a final stop at the Accident and Emergency (A and E) ward, and without delay one of the nurses rushed inside the emergency ward. She later emerged from the ward looking dejected.  “The patient would not be allowed in, because there is no space,” she said in an angry tone.

Joan Rivers turned 80 on Saturday and to celebrate that, E! Network staged a Joan Rivers Takeover.  According to the birthday girl, "I'm having a great time. One of the asymmetries of globalisation is that whereas productive assets (highly skilled labour and capital) are mobile across boundaries, it is still the responsibility of governments in individual countries to secure jobs and prosperity for over 90 per cent of the population trapped within specific geographic boundaries.  Mechanisms and institutions for global coordination of development are very weak. For about 70 years since the end of the Second World War and the setting up of the Bretton Woods Institutions and the United Nations (UN), the world has had tepid attempts at codification and enforcement of ‘international standards’.  Despite all the rules under the UN Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR), the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and the World Bank and IMF among others as well as all the ‘indices’ by the new industry of rating agencies, the global economy is still one governed by the survival of the fittest.

The Nigerian Army School of Signal Corps yesterday said its personnel trained in communication skills are equipped in handling information as regards emergency situations especially in the war-torn Northern parts of Nigeria.

The  Deputy Commandant who also doubles as the Director of Training, Colonel Kayode Umaru, made this disclosure at the kick off of the Nigerian Army's (NA) mid-year exercise for 194 trainees in the school. EXCLUSIVE: Police Ambush, Smash Car Theft Syndicate in Lagos

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) led by the Officer-in-Charge, Abba Kyari, a Superintendent of Police, of the Lagos  State Police Command, on Sunday, ambushed and smashed a high-powered car theft syndicate. The gang had successfully stolen a Range Rover Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), a Toyota Camry, Honda Accord 2011 model and a Toyota Prado Jeep, from the owners had already made plans to dispose them off.

It was gathered that the suspects were on their way to smuggle the stolen cars out of Lagos through Badagry right through to the Seme border, when they were ambushed by the police owing to a tip off by an informant.

30 year old viola player, Natalie Holt took everyone by surprise when she pelted Simon Cowell with eggs during the live finals of Britain's Got talent. She has since apologised and admitted her actions were "silly" but she was bundled off stage by security guards after running to the front while finalists Richard and Adam sang an operatic version of The Impossible Dream.

The 30-year-old musician's band Raven Quartet was part of the orchestra accompanying the Welsh opera brothers during their performance on Saturday night. However, BGT said police were called after Ms Holt's "misguided actions", but added that it would not be taking any further action against her.

Cowell, who had subsequently removed his jacket, attempted to brush off the episode with a joke.
