SEGUN ADENIYI: Suntai and the Amunibuni Syndrome

Ever since the ailing Governor of Taraba State, Mr Danbaba Suntai, was brought back to the country under controversial circumstances, there is hardly any commentary on the issue that would not involve allusion to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua--a development for which the Yoruba people have a name: ‘Amunibuni’. While the name conveys very deep meaning, it is easily explained in the idiom with which I opened the page. Crudely interpreted, it means if a goat is blind on the left eye and its owner is blind on the right eye, any discussion of the goat as one-eyed would always bring into focus the condition of the owner.

Police Arrest Female Law Graduate, Six Others for Armed Robbery

Operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Ikeja, Lagos, have arrested a 35-year-old woman alleged to be leader of a seven-man gang that have been on the operatives wanted list. The woman identified as Chioma Ezekwe , who claimed to have graduated as a Lawyer from the University of Lagos of Lagos, was arrested during a foiled attempt to operate in a hotel located in Ijaye area of Lagos, Monday.

EXCLUSIVE: Teenager roasted to death by fire in Lagos

Tragedy struck yesterday after a teenager was burnt to death in a fire that engulfed a building on Ishawo area of Ikorodu, Lagos. The teenagers parents and two other persons were said to have also been burnt in the fire which started at the wee hours of the morning. Report said they were being attended to at the emergency unit of an undisclosed hospital.

The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained as at time of writing this report. But it was gathered that it started from one of the rooms on 30 Femi Ogunyeye street while occupants of the six-room apartments were asleep.

Africa’s richest man and President of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), Alhaji Aliko Dangote, yesterday promised to reduce by 50 per cent the importation of refined petroleum products for local consumption by 2016.

This he hinged on the takeoff of his refinery, petrochemical and fertilizer complex in Nigeria, which will be financed with a $3.3 billion credit facility from a consortium of banks. Dangote and the banks yesterday signed the agreement for the project, which is expected to be Africa’s largest refinery, petrochemicals and fertilizer manufacturing complex.

PDP Asks Court to Jail Baraje, Oyinlola, Jaja

On two fronts yesterday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) launched offensives against aggrieved party members who pulled out on Saturday to form the New PDP. It approached the Federal High Court, Abuja, to commit the factional national chairman of the party, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, to prison for alleged contempt of court.

Boko Haram Attack: 91 Police Families Receive N35.7 million compensation

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in-charge of Zone one, David Omojola,  has presented the sum of N35.7 million to the 91 families of police officers who lost their lives during the Boko Haram bloody attack in Kano.

Omojola said Thursday at Zone One Command of the police that the victims who were presented with their cheque were the third batch of victims’  families being assisted by the command,  adding that the money which is an insurance coverage for the officers and men was meant to alleviate the sufferings of the deceased  families and those who sustained injuries at various times in the course of their duties.

According to him, the money should not be seen as compensation to the families of the deceased because no amount of money can bring back those who lost their lives  or sustained injury in the course of service.
