Goodness! I got a shocker at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, a few weeks ago when Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu delivered a public lecture. He spoke on “Policing and National Security in Nigeria: The Choices before Us” at the annual talk shop organised by the Department of Public Administration of the university. One of the recurring objections to state police is that it could lead to the break-up of Nigeria. After Ekweremadu had presented his well-articulated thoughts on the issue of restructuring the police to effectively tackle crime in the interest of national peace and security, it was the turn of discussants to make their contributions.

President Goodluck Jonathan Monday evening departed Abuja for Nairobi where he will join other African leaders Tuesday at the inauguration of Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta as Kenya’s fourth President. He was accompanied to Mr. Kenyatta’s swearing-in ceremony at the Kasarani Sports Complex in Nairobi by the Acting Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Garba Umar, Senator Emmanuel Paulker and the Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed.

Subsidy Fraud: DMO Wants Case Reopened against Ubah

The Debt Management Office (DMO) has petitioned the Police Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Milverton Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, to reopen the allegation of fuel subsidy fraud levelled against the Chairman, Capital Oil and Gas Industries Limited, Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah.
Top police sources informed THISDAY Sunday that based on the strength of the petition, the police might be compelled to re-invite Ubah for further investigations and interrogation on the allegation surrounding his company's involvement in the subsidy crisis.

Former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher
Former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher has died at 87 following a stroke, her spokesman has said. Lord Bell said: "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning."
Baroness Thatcher was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990. She was the first woman to hold the post. Her family is expected to make a further statement later, reports the BBC.
