Fed Govt to Break off Negotiations with ASUU

Culled from Thisday- With no end in sight to the debilitating strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the federal government, which has been holding negotiations with the union for weeks, with the aim of reaching a compromise on its demands, may be forced to break off negotiations, investigations have revealed.

Tagged 'Delivering maritime security to Africa', the ogoing conference which was organised by the Nigerian Navy (NN), in partnership with the International Quality and Productivity Centre (IQPC), was instituted to address maritime insecurity in the GoG.

Some of the countries which participated are Spain, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Germany, Saudi Arabia, United States of America, Cameroon, Malaysia, France, Dubai, Togo, Pakistan, Canada, Tanzania, South Asia, Netherlands and South Africa amongst others.

Pandemonium erupted yesterday evening at the Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos when police officers attached to the Ishaga Divisional Headquarters clashed with some factional members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC).

It was gathered that trouble started when policemen on patrol stopped the OPC conveyor which was moving towards Agege area, where they had aimed to launch a unit of the congress in the local government area.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained a medical representative who attempted to record policemen attached to the Area E Command in the act of arresting a commercial motorcyclist. 

The victim who was identified as Gregory Ekene Muonyililo, was arrested at the Amuwo Odofin area of the state for trying to take videos of policemen who were allegedly harassing a commercial motorcyclist.

President Goodluck Jonathan has sacked Alhaji Inuwa Abdul-kadir, and relieved his appointment as the Minister of Youth Development with effect from yesterday August 26, 2013.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim announced this decision yesterday in a statement directing Abdul-Kadir to hand over to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry.

Whether it is Chinua Achebe’s “There Was a Country” or Femi Fani-Kayode’s “Lagos, The Igbo and Servants of Truth”, there is always a little spark to ignite meaningless arguments over who created Lagos, who betrayed who, who perpetrated genocide, who invented ethnic politics, and such like. These are issues that should belong in the past but are being treated as fresh developments everyday of the week.

Security Operatives Uncover Illegal Oil Wells in Lagos, Kogi

Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC),  Lagos State Command and the Inspector General of Police Special Task Force on Anti-pipeline Vandalism, at the weekend uncovered illegal oil wells in both Lagos and Kogi States respectively.

The operatives of the NSCDC had at Alimatu Ilo Street, Ejigbo, Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State, discovered wells dug to the level of oil pipelines, where products suspected to be petroleum products were siphoned into trucks by vandals.

Navy Hands over Bayelsa Oil Thieves to EFCC

For 11 Nigerians and a Camerounian suspected  of oil theft, the day of justice is approaching. The end of the road in their nefarious activities came recently when officials of the Nigerian Navy intercepted their boat and arrested them for allegedly stealing 10,000 litres of illegally refined diesel   off the waterways of the Egweama community in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

With preliminary investigations concluded to determine their culpability or otherwise, the suspects have now being handed over to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for further investigations and possible trial for crime against the nation’s economy.

FAAN Blames Arik Air, Probes Stowaway Incident

The   Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has blamed Arik Air for negligence that led a teenager to stow away in its aircraft that brought him from Benin to Lagos at the weekend. It expressed the determination of the Nigerian aviation authorities to probe how the teenage boy managed to hide inside the undercarriage of the  plane.

Airport security arrested the stowaway teenager on Saturday following the alarm by passengers who saw him emerge from the undercarriage of the 45-minute Arik flight from Benin, officials said. "We have launched an investigation into the incident. This is a clear case of security breach," FAAN spokesman, Mr. Yakubu Dati,  told AFP.
