Weeks after the manager of Ikoyi Golf Club manager, Kolawole Ahmed and three others plunged into the Majidun River in Ikorodu, 15-year-old Fouad Feyisetan Owonifari, Tuesday drowned in yet another river in Ikorodu.
The deceased who was a student of Ikosi High School, Ketu, was said to have drowned at 10:30am at the Oniyanri River, Owode Village, Ikorodu. It was gathered that the deceased had gone to swim with his brother when the currents swept him away before help could come.
According to the deceased's mother, Mrs. Kemi Owonifari, a member of Lagos State Neighbourhood Group, she had permitted them to go to the river to take their bath as was normal practice.
She expressed dismay that the deceased's younger brother came back to regale her with the sad tale of how some strong current swept away the brother when they were bathing.
Confirming the incident, the Spokesman, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said rescue efforts began immediately the information filtered in.
He said, "NEMA and Nigerian Marine Navy received the distress call around 4:30 pm and when we got to the scene, we tried the best we could do but we did not succeed in the recovery.
"We suspended the operation for the day and commenced search this morning and by 10:59am, we recovered the body where the currents had taken it to.
"NEMA handed over the body to the Vice Chairman of Isheri LCDA, who handed the body to the family of the deceased for burial preparations."
