EXCLUSIVE: Police Quell Protesting Butchers in Lagos

By Chiemelie Ezeobi

Pandemonium erupted this morning at the Abattoir, Agege area of Lagos, when some dissatisfied butchers came out in their numbers to register their grouse at the new scheme by the state government.
Carrying different placards, the butchers expressed their dissatisfaction with the new Eko meat selling van  scheme which they claimed was not in their interest.
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Mr. Damasus Ozoani, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the police were able to quell the protest and restore peace.

He said, "Some disgruntled butchers took to the street to protest the new Eko meat selling van that replaced the old ones they were driving.

"Although the new one is equipped with all the modern day instrument used in meat butchering and haulage, the disgruntled ones stopped the vehicle from going out to their various destinations today (yesterday).

"When the information filtered in, the Agege Police Division promptly deployed some of its operatives to the area and they were able to disperse the protesters."

Ozoani further said the new scheme which was embarked on by the state government about six months, was in partnership with some stakeholders who wanted an upgrade in meat butchering and haulage.

He however said the stakeholders had to engage the protesters in a meeting after the protest to get to the root of the matter and ensure the issues are ironed out.

He added, "We have policemen on ground there at the moment pending the outcome of the meeting between the stakeholders and the aggrieved persons. We hope all the differences will be sorted out."

He urged members of the public to go about their businesses, while calling on aggrieved persons to take their grievances to the appropriate authorities instead of constituting public nuisance.
