EXCLUSIVE: Woman Sets Husband Ablaze in Lagos

Lagos PRO, NGOZI BRAIDE

By Chiemelie Ezeobi
As a culmination of a series of misunderstanding with her husband, a middle-aged woman, Mrs. Esther Anayo, yesterday allegedly set her husband, Peter ablaze at the Ijegemo area of Lagos.
It was gathered that when the neighbours heard raised voices, they initially waved it off as the the couple were known for bickering and fighting with each other.
But despite their misgivings about the shout of help from the victim, the residents attempted to break into the house when they saw thick billows of smoke spiraling from the couple's apartment.

However, help came late as the entire building was razed down by the fire. Concerned neighbours called in Policemen from Isheri Division who intercepted and arrested Esther as she tried to flee.

Eyewitness account said the victim couldn't flee because the couple's room was padlocked from outside in a apparent move to prevent anyone from either going in or out.

But in her confessional statement at the station, Esther debunked claims that she set out to kill her husband. She claimed the fire was caused by a lit candle which fell and caught fire.

Confirming the incident, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, Damasus Ozoani, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident, saying investigation had begun.

He said the suspect would be transfered to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID),Panti, Yaba, today for further investigation.
