No fewer than four persons including the manager of the elite Ikoyi Golf Club, Ikoyi, Lagos, Mr. Kolawole Ahmed, plunged to their death at the wee hours of yesterday in the Majidun River, along Ikorodu Road.
The four persons were in a Hilux pick up van with registration number KSF918AU belonging to Ahmed. THISDAY gathered that the Ahmed alongside the other three occupants were on their way back from the golf club when they plunged into the river.
Although the cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained as at press time, THISDAY gathered that it could have resulted as a result of poor visibility as they were said to be on the road at 5am.
When contacted, the state Public Relations Officer, South-west zone, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said rescue operations were stopped at about 5pm to resume at 6am today.
According to Farinloye, the rescue team comprising of NEMA, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the state Police Command alongside local divers had to quit after hours of thorough search yielded nothing.
He said,"Kolawole Ahmed was the manager at Ikoyi Golf Club was heading home from work at 5am when he plunged into the river with three other occupants. We are yet to ascertain the identities of the other three persons."
He said rescue operations started at 8am because the information didn't get to the rescue teams in timeout hours after the incident occurred.
"We left the scene by 5pm and we will resume operations again tomorrow (today) by 6am. However,at this point what we are looking for is the bodies and see if they will surge and float."
Also speaking, LASEMA General Manager, Dr. Femi Okei-Osayintolu, said they moved in and commenced rescue efforts after upon notification of the incident by
eyewitnesses.
He said although the vehicle was recovered, the bodies of the four occupants were not seen despite rescue efforts.
