IG Task Force Re-Arrests Ex-NNPC Staff for Pipeline Vandalism

As part of the continuous measures to curb pipeline vandalism, the operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit, weekend, re-arrested a former member of  staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Majiyagbe Bashiru.

Bashiru who had been sentenced to five years imprisonment for pipeline vandalism, had finished his sentence few weeks ago only to be re-arrested in the act at Odi Ifediwo area of Ogun state, while vandalising an NNPC pipeline.

Confirming the arrest, the Officer-in-Charge of the Task Force, Friday Ibadin, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, said the arrest was made possible by source who tipped off the police that the vandals were operating at the Odi Ifediwo area.

Led by the Sector Commander of the task force, Lagos, Onaghise Osayande, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, he said police operatives cordoned off the area and in the process arrested Bashiru.

He said, "After the arrest, the police operatives also recovered a DAF truck with registration number XJ359DKA and also discovered the spot where they planted three valves with hose of about 100meters. It was shocking to realise that the same Bashiru who I arrested five years ago, finished his sentence and went back to the same crime.”

In his confessional statement, Bashiru who worked as a security man with NNPC before his arrest, expressed disbelief that he was heading back to jail barely weeks after he secured his release.
