200 campaigners demand a UN development plan that makes governments more accountable


Almost 200 civil society groups from 77 countries are calling on the United Nations (UN) to put government accountability and independent media at the centre of a new framework for global development.
The UN is currently working to devise a global development agenda for after 2015, the target date for the Millennium Development Goals, which will set worldwide priorities for development in the coming decades. This week the Open Working Group for Sustainable Development Goals will be meeting in New York to further discussions on governance.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Obi Umahi, today commissioned the 65 Battalion Alfa and Bravo Company Offices, sponsored by Lieutenant General TY Danjuma, under the leadership of the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Haruna Dasuki. While commending Gen Danjuma, he said the transformation agenda in the army is not talk-chop rather action backed by action.

Nigerian Police train 160,000 Police personnel ahead of Elections



The Force Spokesperson, CSP Frank Mba said the Inspector-General of Police, IGP MD Abubakar, has expressed the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure a hitch-free guber elections taking place in Ekiti and Osun States this year and the 2015 general elections.

The IGP, who gave this assurance when the US Ambassador, Mr. James Entwistle paid him a courtesy visit at the FHQ, Abuja, Tuesday, 4th February, 2014 noted that already not less than one hundred and sixty thousand (160,000) Police personnel are receiving relevant training on election duties in different Police training institutions across the country in preparation for these elections. 

EXCLUSIVE: Navy Calls for Concessions from US to Purchase Adequate Platforms, Hardware


With the challenge of dearth of adequate platforms to patrol the nation's vast maritime domain, the Nigerian Navy (NN), has called for more concessions in the purchase of Excess Defence Articles and other maritime security hardware from United States.

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Usman Jibrin, made this call at the opening ceremony of Exercise OBANGAME Express 2014 final planning conference held in Navy Town, Lagos.

House finally confirms Appointment of Service Chiefs

The appointment of all the service chiefs nominated by President Goodluck Jonathan Tuesay got the formal blessing of the House of Representatives following the adoption of the report of the joint committees of Defence, Navy, Air force and Army.
Last  wednesday, the joint committees screened the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Marshal Alex Badeh, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Major-General Kenneth Minimah, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Usman Jibrin and Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Vice Marshal Adesola Amosu, in a closed door session.

EXCLUSIVE: Police Finally Arrest Former Lagos Deputy Governor



Months after she was declared wanted, the Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police has finally arrested the former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Alhaja Sinatu Aderoju Ojikutu.
Ojikutu who was declared wanted by the unit on June 19, 2013 in connection with the case of obtaining the sum of N130million from one Cajethan Okekearu, was arrested at her residence yesterday evening.

EXCLUSIVE: Court Docks Cobbler for DefilingTwins in Lagos


The Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates' Court yesterday docked one Yusuf Ojuolape, a 23-year-old cobbler,  for defiling six-year-old twins at the Okearin area of Lagos Island. 
The suspect who appeared before the court, was charged with the defilement of the six-year-old twins in his residence, which contravenes section 135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

EXCLUSIVE: Man Impersonates Alake of Egbaland, Attempts to Defraud Victim of N1.7B


For attempting to defraud his victim, one Olubukola Awofeso, a UK resident, of the sum of N1.7billion, Gani  Akinmade, a serial fraudster, has been arrested by men of the Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Ikoyi, Lagos. 
The suspect had posed on Facebook, one of the social media networks, as the popular Alake of Egbaland, HRM Oba Aremu Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland and had lured him victim into parting with an initial sum of N300,000.
