EXCLUSIVE: Man Impersonates Alake of Egbaland, Attempts to Defraud Victim of N1.7B


For attempting to defraud his victim, one Olubukola Awofeso, a UK resident, of the sum of N1.7billion, Gani  Akinmade, a serial fraudster, has been arrested by men of the Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Ikoyi, Lagos. 
The suspect had posed on Facebook, one of the social media networks, as the popular Alake of Egbaland, HRM Oba Aremu Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland and had lured him victim into parting with an initial sum of N300,000.

Confirming the arrest, the unit's Police Spokesperson, 
DSP Ngozi Isintume-Agu, said it was made possible based on the information made available to CP Tunde Ogunsakin.

She said the suspect had opened a Facebook account with the name of the revered chief and attempted to swindle some unsuspecting victims.

She said the deal was for the victim to partner in a supposed business of supplying 300 transformers valued at approximately N1,007,700,600 (one billion, seven million, seven hundred thousand and six hundred naira).

The PRO said the unit swung into action when the chief categorically stated that he has no account on Facebook and denied engaging in any business transaction with the said victim.

She added that investigations are ongoing and that the arrested suspect would soon be charged to court, while efforts are on to arrest the fleeing suspects.
She said, "The CP once again advises members of the public to be mindful of the friends they keep on social network."

In his confession, the 22-years-old suspect and a drop-out of Tai Solarin College of Education, Ijebu-Ode, said he conspired with one Seyi Lewis and Ifeanyi to perpetrate the fraud.  

He said he was arrested when he attempted to withdraw the sum of N13,000 from the sum sent by his victim through Western Union No. FCL9992000.
