Force Spokesperson, Frank Mba
The Benue State Police Command has
arrested a dismissed Naval officer and two others for collecting money
from unsuspecting job seekers, especially youths, under the disguise of
being Naval recruitment officers.
This was contained in a release signed by the Force Spokesperson, Frank Mba, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).
According to Mba, on 7 February, 2013
at about 5pm, based on a tip-off, a team of Policemen attached to the
Benue State Police Command arrested three fraudsters: one Emmanuel
David Audu ‘m’, a dismissed Naval personnel, Mr Adegoke Musbahu
residing at Block ‘F’ Room 20, Abacha Barracks, Abuja, who is the
leader of the gang, m’ and Idowu Abraham at Habibat Hotel, Old GRA,
Makurdi.
The three suspects, Mba said,
capitalized on the gullibility and desperation of unsuspecting
Nigerian youths by claiming to be naval officers involved in
recruitment exercise for the Navy.
He said at the time of their arrest,
11 persons had already been hoodwinked into believing that they were on
the verge of being recruited into the Nigerian Navy.
Items recovered from them include: two
laptops, three Naval uniforms, one Naval Identity Card bearing the
name of the syndicate leader, documents capturing names of candidates
and the sum of one hundred thousand (N100,000.00), which Emmanuel David
Audu admitted he collected from their victims, many of whom paid
between N10,000 and N20,000 each to “facilitate” the recruitment
process.
Mba said the ring leader confessed
that since he lost his job as a naval officer he took to illegal
recruitment and racketeering as his main source of income and
livelihood.
He also said that the case is still
under investigation at the State CID, Makurdi but would be charged to
court as soon as investigation is completed.
