The Lagos State Commissioner of Sports, Mr. Waheed Oshodi,
has urged the Nigerian Navy (NN) to remain focused in sustaining momentum in
sportsmanship.
Oshodi who was represented by Mr. Tunde Bankole, made this
disclosure at the recently concluded 2014 Western Naval Command (WNC) Sports
Competition organised for officers and men of the command at the legacy pitch
of the National Stadium, Surulere.
He said, "Winning is a testimony of hard work rather
than getting into nefarious activities. Therefore, the desire to excel must not
extinguish, you must sustain the momentum as we shall ensure conducive
environment in Lagos."
Also speaking, the Flag Officer Commanding, WNC, Rear
Admiral Ilesanmi Alade, said the intra command competition was an avenue for
excellence, adding that the objective of organising the competition has been
achieved.
While thanking the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral
Usman Jibrin, especially for the guidance towards ensuring that the command
meets its goals, he said the command command is now set to participate in
future military sporting events.
Alade who was represented by the WNC Chief Staff Officer,
Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ofik, said the sporting event has enabled the command
select its team for the next NN games.
Expressing satisfaction in the performance of the team, he
said the military has done much to ensure that it produces athletes that
represents the country in major international competition.
He said, "The Nigerian Navy Barrack Sporting Field in
Mobil Road has made history by producing sports men of international reckoning
and who are able to represent Nigeria in major events abroad."
The competition five-day competition ended with Team Alpha
emerging the overall winner with 11 gold
and 8 silver and 7 bronze medals, while team Bravo came second with 11 gold, 8
silver and 4 bronze medals.
Team Delta and Team Charlie came 3rd and 4th respectively
with 7 Gold, 9Silver and 7 Bronze and 7 Gold, 6Silver and 6 Bronze.
Other teams were Teams Bravo, Charlie and Delta from naval
schools, ships, and other naval establishments, also participated in exercises
like Tennis, Swimming, Volley ball,
Basket ball, Chess, Badminton, Athletics
and Golf.
