Ram Singh, suspect
A suspect in the fatal gang rape of a student in India is in a critical condition after allegedly being beaten and poisoned in prison. The defence lawyer for Vinay Sharma said that the defendant was taken to a Delhi hospital on Tuesday after being assaulted by fellow inmates, reports Sky News.
A.P.Singh told the AFP news agency: "He was vomiting blood and running a very high fever. "He was also suffering from chest pains. He is in a very critical condition." The lawyer claimed that the vomiting was the result of slow poisoning of Sharma's food over a period of several weeks.
Another suspect, Ram Singh, was found hanged in his cell in the same prison in March. Sharma is one of four men and a teenager on trial for the gang rape, robbery and murder of a 23-year-old student on a Delhi bus in December.
The woman died from her injuries in a hospital in Singapore 13 days after the attack.
