A miniature hell was let loose yesterday morning at Oronna Street, Off Puposola Street, Abule Egba, Lagos, when a 60-year old man, identified as Gbadebo Elegbede pummeled his wife and mother of four children, Maria to death over a missing N500 note.
And as at press time, sources said the suspect was yet to be arrested as he had allegedly threatened to deal with anyone who call in the police, using his supposed occult powers.
The deceased was until her death the mother of his four children, although one of them (Bisi) is late now. The couple were thus left with three children, one male and two females who are now married.
Eyewitness account said the scuffle started at about 8am on Monday when the suspect raised an alarm that his N500 was missing. He was said to have immediately accused their son of being the culprit.
But it was gathered that the deceased had defended her son saying he could not have stolen the money, leading to a serious argument between the couple which soon degenerated to a scuffle.
In the heat of the moment, the suspect was said to have hit the woman with an object and she fell down, bleeding profusely from the mouth.
It was also gathered that at the point their 17-year old son, identified as Johnson, came in, his mother was already in a pool of her own blood, and attempts to resuscitate her proved abortive as she was already dead.
While the nature of his crime was yet to sink in, the husband was said to have locked up the deceased’s body in their living room, refusing anyone who dared access to the body.
Even when Johnson called in his mother's relatives from Ogun, the suspect reportedly refused them access to the the deceased, saying she belonged to him whether alive or dead.
Some of the relatives who did not want their name in print said they were torn by indecision because of the threat to their lives by their in-law.
According to them, they were forced to go back to their base in Ogun State since he refused them access to the corpse, adding that they are confused as to whether to report the matter to the police in Ogun State or in Lagos State.
One of the relatives said their indecision was based in the fact that the suspect has been threatening everyone with his occult powers.
He said, "The man is notorious for seizing the corpse of his deceased family. When Bisi, their third daughter died three years ago, he seized the corpse and up till now we don’t know where he buried her body."
