Detectives attached to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), of the Lagos State Police Command had in an overnight operation during the weekend, laid ambush and arrested five suspected car snatchers including two of the stolen car receivers.

The operatives also recovered two pistols and a cache of cartridges as well as a Honda Bulldog and a Toyota Camry Saloon car from the suspects. While one of their car snatchers whose identity was not disclosed was arrested on Saturday alongside the two receivers, the other members of the gang were picked up on Sunday.

Confirming the arrests, the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko,  said the gang were notorious for terrorising motorists and making away with their cars.

He said the operatives acting on a tip off had arrested the suspects and had also recovered two pistols and cartridges from the suspects as well as Toyota Camry and a Honda Bulldog.

He said the Camry was reported stolen from the younger brother to the owner last week, which put the operatives on red alert and they first picked up three of the suspects while the other two were arrested later on.

Manko said the suspects snatch cars around Ikorodu and Idimu areas of Lagos, adding that, the  vehicles were recovered in one of the receivers hideout in Otta, Ogun state.

While reiterating the command's determination to reduce criminality in the state  to a minimal level, he maintained that contrary to public claims, the issue of car snatching had drastically reduced in the last one year.

He however, urged motorists to be security conscious, adding that they should help security agencies by installing tracking devices in their cars.
