EXCLUSIVE: Ketu Crisis: Lagos Police Arrest 20 Suspected Hoodlums

Three days after the prolonged factional clash at the Ketu area of Lagos was resolved, the state Police Command yesterday raided the area and arrested about 20 suspected hoodlums who were fingered in connection with the lingering crisis.

With the arrests, peace has since returned to the crisis-torn area and commercial activities which were hitherto disrupted for over three days resumed in full swing. Confirming the arrests, the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko said the suspects were picked up for inciting the crisis at market place in the last three days.

According to him, the bone of contention for the warring group was none other than the sharing formular of the levies taxed from traders at both the Ketu and Ikosi markets.

He disclosed that the crisis started when a faction felt they should have the lion share of the revenue, a move that was strongly and violently opposed by the opposing camp, which lead to the wanton destruction of properties.

He said, "They were disrupting the commercial activities in the area, forcing shops and traders to shut down their businesses. Dangerous weapons were freely used by the hoodlums. We have however arrested arrested.

"We have concluded investigations and they will be charged to court without delays. Normalcy has since returned to the markets and area but at the same time, we deployed some of our men at the markets.

"I directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, DCP Tunde Sobulo, to meet with the divisional police officer, market leaders, with a view to stop the crisis and find a lasting solution."
