Despite a dismissal letter which took effect in March this year, 40-year-old Muhammed Ayinla Ibrahim, was yesterday arrested by the Provost Unit of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), whilst he was still parading himself as an officer.
The native of Abeokuta, Ogun State, who was dismissed on grounds of misconduct, was picked up at Mile 2 area of the state for operating illegally, constituting nuisance and parading himself as an official of the agency.
In a statement, the agency's Public Relations Officer, Bola Ajao, said the agency tried to dispatch the dismissal letter through DHL to his residence in Igando when he refused to collect and sign the letter, but found out that the address given in his employment letter was false.
She said, "The management in accordance with international practices sent the letter through DHL to his known and registered address at number 17, Egan road, Igando and subsequently returned back to the agency on the basis of bad address with the proof of service of April 29, 2013."
She said the agency had to swing into action to effect his arrest because they had received several complains about impostors who extort and collect money from innocent motorists around different locations in the state.
She said, "The provost received a tip off from motorists on a LASTMA official who operates in mufti and arrest indiscriminately. Surveillance flash was placed on him and he was eventually arrested wearing the crested vest of the agency.
"But during his arrest, Ayinla incited the mob against the provost team before he was over powered. He has voluntarily signed and collected the dismissed letter and we mandated him to hand over other kits belonging to the agency. He has since been handed over him to the police for further investigation."
She added, "As a responsible organisation with a high level of integrity and accountability, a lot of measures have been put in place by LASTMA to counter any acts of impersonation or sabotage and ensure the interests of the citizenry are protected.
"LASTMA does not operate in mufti and members of the public should be wary of such person and quickly call the attention of the agency. As LASTMA respect your rights, Lagos motorists must also respect law and the rights of other road users."
