EXCLUSIVE: Seven Dead as Police Engage Robbers in Shootout


No fewer than seven persons were yesterday gunned down in different operations at the Ajah and Ajao Estate area of Lagos, when police operatives engaged an eight-man armed robbery gang in a gun duel.  It was gathered that although the police had succeeded  in killing five members of the armed robbery gang, two policemen were however caught in the line of fire.

According to report, the gang had first stormed the Ajah area of the state at about 1am, where they snatched a Honda Odyssey space bus reportedly headed for Ajao Estate.


It was however gathered that midway, they reportedly shot two policemen who were on patrol at Ajao Estate and as at press time, one of the policemen who had been rushed to the hospital was said to have died.

At the scene of their operation at Ajao estate, the gang was said to have robbed a warehouse where telephones and electronic gadgets were sold.

It was gathered that the SARS operatives had trailed the robbers to Stadium Bus Stop before the gun duel which killed one of the policemen and five members of the gang.

When accosted by the police operatives deployed by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko, through the  Special Anti Robbery Squad's (SARS) Commander, Abba Kyari, a Superintendent of Police, the gang exchanged fire with the policemen. 

Police sources said, “During the gun duel, three of the suspects were first shot and although the driver of the vehicle was hit with bullet but he kept moving until they reached Eko bridge . 

"At that point, the vehicle somersaulted and three out of the eight suspects managed to escaped with bullet wounds while the rest died. The bodies of the dead suspects were taken to the police command's headquarters , Ikeja."

The police also recovered the Honda Odyssey car, four automatic Pump Action Rifles (PARs), four Brownie pistols and a revolver pistol.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the robbers were responsible for the killing of manager of 04 hotel and three other members of staff last week in Ajah area. 

According to police sources, the hoodlums were said to have accused the manager and staff of giving the police information about their gang which led to the arrest of suspected leader of the gang.
