One of the several branches
of the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) at no 49 Ademola Adetokunbo, Victoria Island,
Lagos, yesterday went up in flames at about 7pm. Checks revealed that
although concerted efforts by fire fighters stopped the spread of the fire, the
flames had however affected the entire ground floor of the bank.
This is coming barely two
weeks after another fire, which took the intervention of a team of Federal Fire
Service from the El Rufai Fire service, the Federal Fire Service and the FCT
Fire Service to put out, gutted the internal audit department of FCMB in Area
Seven, Garki, Abuja.
It was gathered that the
cause of the Lagos fire was yet to be ascertained even as investigations has
begun to unravel the actual cause of the spark that later led to the inferno.
When contacted, the
Spokesperson, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South-west Zone, Mr.
Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident but said there was no casualty.
He said, “There was a fire
outbreak at FCMB office in Victoria Island. The Federal from the Onikan Station
and State Fire Services were mobilised to the scene of the fire incident.
“Initially, the fire
operators were faced with the challenge of crossing the barricade of the bank
to go in and battle the flames.
“However, much later, we were
able to break the barricades and crossed over and battled to put out the
flames.”
When asked the cause of the
fire, Farinloye said the premises were locked up and they could not investigate
and ascertain the cause of the fire, adding that when they got there, they only
saw the two security men in the premises.
