Businessman's Mysterious Death Shocks Lagos Neighbourhood

The street where the incident happened
The last time anyone including his neighbours saw Mr. Sylvanus Ikelie Okoye, a Lagos businessman, was precisely two weeks ago. His sudden disappearance albeit mysterious at first miffed his neighbours, as he did not tell them he was traveling yet his house was under lock and key.

After two weeks of his purported disappearance, it was yesterday discovered that he did not travel at all. All that time, he was locked up in his residence at Ezemegbu Drive, off Ago Palace Way, Okota, area of Lagos. He was dead.

The 39-year-old bachelor, from Abidi, Umu Ochi, Anambra State, died in a gruesome manner. When the door of his apartment was broken into, a gory sight was what it held for all. The deceased had a rope toed round his neck and a pestle and a knife placed beside him on the bed.

The manner of his death threw the area into pandemonium as not even his family could explain whether the deceased had any sour business deal with anyone who would have wanted him dead.

It was gathered that as the Lagos State Police has commenced investigations into unraveling the mystery, two persons have already been arrested.

According to the deceased's elder brother, Paul Okoye, an electronics dealer on the Lagos Island, said he was shocked when he saw the stinking corpse of his brother in the room.

He said, "I was not even aware that they were looking for him. In fact, I was called on the phone by the landlord who informed me that my  brother has not been seen in the compound for some days.

"When I got there, since they had his phone and house key in their custody, we opened the door to his flat and saw his body and a rope was tied on his neck. There was also a pestle and knife on top of his bed. Unknown persons murdered him."

He added, “We are confused now, we have called in the police from Okota Police station, they have collected the knife and pestle. What I am craving for now is justice. Police should investigate this matter and prosecute all involved.

"We were told that the mallam who guards their house was not around on that fateful day, so a certain man dropped the key to my brother’s house and his telephone handset with a woman who sells in front of the house."

He however said the security man has since admitted that  he knows the particular person who dropped the key and can identify him if he is found.

The state Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of police (DSP), could not contacted to confirm the story as she was in a meeting.
