No fewer than five policemen were yesterday allegedly beaten to a state of coma yesterday in front of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba, Lagos, by an angry mob consisting of commercial motorcyclists and residents of the area .
It was gathered that policemen attached to Area D Command, had stormed the Idi-araba area to arrest commercial motorcyclists who had been hitherto been banned from 475 roads by the state government.
The motorcyclists were said to have allegedly beat one of the officers to a coma. The other policemen who regrouped later and came back to effect arrest of the errant motorcyclists were said to have been beaten too.
According to an eyewitness, Mr. Tunde Buhari, the warring motorcyclists had ganged up and engaged the policemen in a duel.
He said, "When the first batch of policemen were beaten up, reinforcement came from the police station but the protesters unleashed terror on them and they fled.
"However, the protesters were later overpowered by policemen. The policemen who came in patrol vans from different stations under the command shot sporadically into the air which hit a male passerby who was immediately rushed to the hospital."
When contacted, the state Deputy Police Public Relations Spokesperson, DSP Chukwuma Ozoani, said peace has been restored to the area by the police.
