The family of the recent victim of police
recklessness, 32-year-old Oyoma Edewor, has petitioned the Lagos State Government,
Babatunde Fashola, over the death of their son in the hands of a police
sergeant, Otene Godwin, with force number 355272.
Meanwhile, the petition from the legal counsel to the Edewor
family, Sheriff Adebayo, which was sent to the governor and the commissioner
for justice and attorney general of the state reads in part; "We would
like to bring to the notice of your office the unlawful killing of a lagos
state resident Mr. Oyoma Edewor.
"He was killed on May 11, 2014 around FESTAC gate area
of Lagos State, by a member of the Nigerian Police Force, Area Command Area ‘E’ by the name Sergeant
Otene.
"Based on the information before us and consequent upon
our enquiries and accounts of eye witnesses we believe the occurrence.
"The deceased was having his vehicle towed into FESTAC
where two policemen, one of them
identified as Sergeant Otene of the Area E Command, who were on guard duty left
their security post.”
"Officers whose acts at every instance defaces the
image of the Nigerian police and the people of Lagos State as a whole.
Consequent upon this, we urge you to use your good office to monitor and support
the immediate investigation of this matter so that justice may be done
concerning this hideous act."
