Deploring the recent double suicide terrorist attacks that occurred at the Federal College of Education Kano which resulted in the death of 17 persons and injured 35 others, security expert, Dr. Ona Ekhomu, said it was shameful and unacceptable.
Ekhomu, who is the President of Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria (AISSON), said the inability of security officials and school authorities to protect school students was disturbing.
He said, "It is the responsibility of the school and security authorities to protect young men and women in various schools throughout the country in order to keep them safe from terrorist attacks.
"There is a social contract between parents and the school authorities which mandates school authorities to keep students safe while on campus.
“Unfortunately, the schools are failing in this duty and parents are not aware of their rights to seek redress for the negligent deaths of their kids.
"In the last 90 days three or more tertiary institutions had been attacked in Kano State. Those young men and women deserved to live, but their dreams have been terminated permanently.
"The recent high criticality suicide attacks that occurred are clear pointers to the fact that Boko Haram is targeting school students.
"It therefore behooves the school authorities to fund urgent security solutions through deployment of armed security personnel on school campuses, use of closed circuit television systems and security lockdown hardware.
"Others include Installation of alarm systems and air raid sirens in schools, training and deployment of students in detecting potential suicide agents, frequent emergency drills and employment of certified professionals to head school security programs."
