Patience is a Mere Domestic Appendage-Soyinka

The wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, has been accused of getting away with murder in the country and of being used as a political tool, with the tacit support of her husband.

Making this allegation Thursday during an international press conference on the state of the nation, Nigeria’s Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, who alongside human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), pointedly identified the first lady as being neck deep in the political crisis in Rivers State, added that her “seizure of Port Harcourt for 11 days with full security apparatus in tow, indicated that there is something about that madam herself.”

The jury did its job and has since gone to sleep on the Peoples Democratic Party. The question now is not whether the party is guilty as charged; the question is about the length of its punishment. The crux of the matter was how much the PDP had failed Nigeria. The defendant, the PDP, claimed it has had only 14 years and several trillions of naira to change Nigeria, but the 112 million poor Nigerian souls insisted the PDP had to go. The jury decided and granted the wish of the Nigerian masses.

The PDP has failed Nigeria! It failed us yesterday, it is failing as we speak and it has borrowed enough money to get the future of our children started on the path of failure. Some political parties fail you today but they offer you hope of success against tomorrow, the PDP fails you today with enough doom and gloom to last into many tomorrows. Anyone who argues against this will one day argue whether an above-the-law petrol cabal truly deprived Nigerians of trillions of naira in 2011.

Pandemonium erupted at the scene of the building collapse at Ebute Meta area of Lagos on Thursday, when policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on the orders of their Commander, Akeem Odumosu, a Chief Superintendent of Police, arrested the Spokesperson, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South-west, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye.

It was gathered that the policemen had manhandled and then bundled Farinloye into one of the squad patrol vehicles, which  almost marred the rescue operation as other officials of the agency threatened to abandon the rescue operation.

Kidnappers Abduct Hyundai Staff, Demand N25m Ransom

A yet-to-be identified kidnap gang on Tuesday abducted a member of staff of Hyundai Motors Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Chinyere Nwajei, in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State, on her way back from work. It was however, gathered that the unknown gang had since made contact with the victim’s family, demanding the sum of 150,000 dollars (N24,750,000).

The demand bears similarities with the ransom that was demanded from the family of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Chairman, Kehinde Bamigbetan, who was kidnapped two months ago but was later released after part of the ransom was paid.

Building Collapse Claims Baby, Couple, Four Others

Following the early morning collapse of yet another building at the Ebute Meta area of Lagos yesterday, the corpses of a toddler, a couple and four other residents of the ill fated three-storey building have so far been recovered while about seven residents were left with varying degrees of injuries.

Although as a press time, the actual figure of the deceased persons were yet to be ascertained, it was however gathered that the building located at no 29b Oloto Street, off Cemetery Road, Ebute Metta, had given the residents distress signs with cracks all over which were ignored.

Hours after the Court of Appeal in Lagos discharged and acquitted the former Chief Security Officer, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, to late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha,  for the murder of Kudirat Abiola, he was released from the Kirikiri Maximum Prison where he was incarcerated for 15years.

This is just as he was described as a model prisoner throughout his stay behind bars, who adhered to the discipline instilled in him during his military training and career.

Court of Appeal Acquits Al-Mustapha

Former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha has been discharged and acquitted by the Court of Appeal in Lagos for the murder of Kudirat Abiola. The judgment overturns that of the Lagos High Court which sentenced both men to death by hanging.

The presiding judge accused the lower court of being "stroked to secure a conviction by all means." He was sentenced to death on January 30 for conspiracy and murder of Mrs. Abiola. Mrs. Abiola, 45, was shot in Lagos on June 4, 1996, as the lower court ruled, on the orders of Mr. Al-Mustapha.
