A four-man armed robbery gang, Monday, struck at Agunlejika Street, IJeshatedo, Surulere area of Lagos, shot a resident simply identified as Segun dead and went on to steal an undisclosed amount of money from his wife.
The incident which happened at about 11pm threw the entire neighbourhood into panic as residents and motorists fled to safety. According to eyewitness account, the armed robbery gang had allegedly trailed the couple to their house at Ajijedidun Street, probably on a tip off that they were in possession of a large sum of money.
It was gathered that the couple were about entering their compound when the robbers rushed towards the wife and snatched the bag containing the cash from her.
The husband, Segun was said to have allegedly attempted to retrieve the bag when he was shot on the chest and he died on -the-spot immediately.
An eyewitness simply identified as Olufemi said the robbers then started shooting sporadically into the air to scare people away before they made away with their loot.
He added that some people called in police officers attached to Ijesha Police Division and men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), who arrived few minutes after the operation and gave them a hot chase but couldn't arrest them.
As at yesterday, the entire residents wore a gloomy look as they mourned the deceased whom they described as a peace-loving man.
Olufemi, however flayed the incessant armed robbery attack in the area, adding that they have been plagued with the curse of having the rescue come after the operations might have ended.
He said, “I think he probably thought they were hoodlums who just wanted to harass and snatch their bags away. That was why he struggled with them.
"I am sure if he had known they had guns, he would not have given them a fight. It is a painful incident and I think it is high time security is beefed up here because armed robbery incidents here are frequent.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said she was not aware of the incident but promised to contact the DPO at Ijesha to get details of the incident.
