Flooding: School Children Escapes Death

By Chiemelie Ezeobi
Tens of Ogba Primary School pupils were yesterday saved from a near-death experience when they were released by the school authorities after a flash flood  submerged the school property. The Agege Community had a bitter experience yesterday after the torrential rainfall caused a heavy flooding in the area, submerging properties and cars.

Some of the affected areas were Akilo, Sowonuola, Lagos, Abiola Market, Ijaiye, Olarenwaju and Adeyemi Streets. According to the residents,  they had not witnessed this  kind of flooding in over 30 years. However, areas like Sowonuola, Akilo, Lagos Street and Abiola Market were the most hit by the flood that followed the torrential  rainfall.

Though Sowonulua and its environs was flooded, the residents claimed it was caused by an ongoing reconstruction project around Agege Stadium.

The same however could not be said of Ijaiye, Olarenwaju, Adeyemi and Abiola market areas which are a bit distant to the reconstruction site.

Confirming the incident, the Spokesperson, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South-west Zone, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye said the school disaster was averted by the wise action of the authorities.

He called on school authorities to take precautionary measures by keeping school children late till its safe for them to go home after each rainfall.

He said, "Motorists are also advised to leave their vehicles and seek for safer places when it is raining heavily so as to avoid being swept away by flooding as a result of such heavy rainfall.

"In the same vein, Lagosians should avoid taking refuge under dilapidated structures in view of the recent cases of building collapse in the state."
