But for providence, a middle-aged woman would have today been burnt to ashes at the Ajegunle area of Lagos, on suspicion that she stole a newborn baby from a private hospital located at Aiyetoro Street.

Eyewitness account stated that the victim was on her way home from the hospital when passersby, who tried to ascertain how a woman her age could still give birth, accosted her.

FRSC Van Crushes 3 Children to Death in Yenagoa

In a reversal of roles, a van belonging to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) crushed three pupils to death at the weekend, on the street of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital. The pupils were in a tricycle on their way from school on Friday when they met their untimely death. The incident occurred at about 4.30pm along the usually busy Swali market road.

The patrol vehicle was said to be on the chase of a tricycle rider who refused to stop when he was flagged down by Road Safety officials.

Niger Delta: Gunmen Free Dutch Hostages

Niger Delta gunmen have released three Dutch nationals who were abducted a week earlier, the Dutch foreign ministry confirmed on Sunday. "I can confirm they have been freed," said ministry spokesman, Johanne Doornewaard, adding that they were in good health.

He added that he had "no information" on whether any ransom was paid for the release of the trio. Earlier a Nigerian activist who had accompanied the trio had announced their release.

NEMA DG Scores Grassroot Emergency Management Low

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), weekend, scored the grassroot emergency management capabilities low especially as regards risk analysis, data generation and early warning services.

The Director General, NEMA, Muhammad Sani-Sidi, made this disclosure in a press statement signed by the South-west Zonal Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Farinloye, at the end of the International Symposium of Integrated Disaster Risk Governance held in Beijing, China.

Five Oil marketers jailed in Lagos

A Federal High court, sitting in Lagos has sentenced five oil marketers to three years imprisonment after they were arrested with two truck load of stolen Petrol from Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline, Ibafo area of Ogun state.

The convicts, Ishola Ganiyu, Ishola Omopariola, Kayode Ajose, Aramide Solomon and Aranosiola Muruf were docked on a five count charge on conspiracy to wit tampering of pipeline, obstructing free flow dealing in petroleum product and were arraigned in court sometime in March 2013.

Naval Vessel Goes up in Flames, Sinks

          

According to THISDAY here , a Naval vessel identified as Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Encounter, an Offshore Maritime Security (OMS) patrol vessel, went up in flames and sunk while at sea patrolling the waterways to keep the maritime corridor safe.

Luckily however, no fewer than 13 persons on-board survived and were rescued after floating for hours on the open waters outside bar at Lagos Anchorage by Naval personnel who were alerted by a canoe operator passing by.

Partnering the National Emergency Managemt Agency (NEMA), Nigerian Navy (NN) and other agencies, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), yesterday in Lagos coordinated a crisis response training for agencies in the maritime sector.

Codenamed Exercise Ajowa, the emergency training which was carried out at eight nautical miles South-east of the Lagos Fairway Buoy, was done in conjunction with the European Critical Maritime Routes in the Gulf of Guinea (CRIMGO) to enhance interagency cooperation in maritime crisis situation.

Lagos Police Command Arrest Killer Sergeant

The Lagos State Police Command today said it has arrested a sergeant, one Otene Godwin with force no 355272 attached to Area ‘E’ Command for allegedly shooting one Oyoma Edewor to death.

Edewor, a 32-year-old old United Kingdom (UK) returnee, who was a building finishing contractor and was the fourth child in a family of 13, was shot dead in cold blood, an action the bereaved family demanded justice must be done.

According to eyewitness account, the victim who was shot while he was towing a vehicle, was accosted by the trigger-happy policeman and ordered to stop.
