In a reversal of roles, a van belonging to the Federal Road
Safety Corps (FRSC) crushed three pupils to death at the weekend, on the street
of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital. The pupils were in a tricycle on their way from school on
Friday when they met their untimely death. The incident occurred at about
4.30pm along the usually busy Swali market road.
The patrol vehicle was said to be on the chase of a tricycle
rider who refused to stop when he was flagged down by Road Safety officials.
The tricycle rider was said to have ran into a small gully
in the middle of the road which made the vehicle to lose control and it
somersaulted; thereby throwing the three children out.
Two of the occupants (pupils) from the same parents were
reportedly crushed to death by the patrol van which ran over then on high
speed. The third pupil later died at the Federal Medical Centre where she was
taken for treatment.
Alarmed at the carnage they have caused, the FRSC officials,
according to eyewitnesses, fled the scene, a development that sparked protest
from Keke Napep drivers who took over the stretch of Swali road to Imgbi
junction.
Contacted, the state FRSC Sector, Commander, Mr. Vincent
Jack, said though he was not in town, he was informed about the unfortunate
incident; promising to get to the root of the matter.
