The Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police, Milverton, Ikoyi, has arrested a fake couple, Adejayan Adetokunbo and Funke Adebisi, who specialise in smuggling Nigeria abroad especially the United States of America.

The couple were arrested following a tip off by the Assistant Regional Security Officer, United States Consulate General, when they went to the embassy to collect their visas.

In a petition addressed to the Commissioner of Police, SFU, CP Tunde Ogunsakin, the consulate had alleged that the supposed couple had conspired and gone to the US Embassy for interview for Immigrant Visa to USA as a couple.

According to the consulate, the said marriage was discovered to be fraudulent as they were not really married. The duo were also said to be working with touts for purposes of smuggling Nigerians to the United States of America.

A petition dated 15th July 2013, submitted to Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit, CP Tunde Ogunsakin, by Assistant Regional Security Officer, United States Consulate General, alleged that one Adejayan

Confirming the arrests, SFU Spokesperson, Ngozi Isintume-Agu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said investigation revealed that they are not married as purported.

She disclosed that rather theirs was an arranged marriage by one Segun and his syndicate who specialise in merging prospective visa seekers together in marriage for onward smuggling to US.

She said, "Their modus operandi is to merge a lottery visa winner with a non-winner and package both to USA.  In this case, the sum of N1.5 million was collected from Funke and she was purportedly joined in matrimony with  Adetokunbo who genuinely won the lottery visa."

She said when interrogated, both suspects confessed in their statements that they are not husband and wife.

Meanwhile, 35-year-old Adetokunbo, a teacher with Jim's International School, Mafoluku, Oshodi, admitted that although he won the lottery visa, he was however mandated to co-opt with a lady.

He disclosed that he met with Segun who in turn brought one of his clients for the arranged marriage and subsequent interview and visa and with that arrangement, they both travelled to the UK  in 2005 but with a fake name.

He said he lived with the fake name Oludotun Ojukosola Gbenro in Uk until he was caught in 2009 and deported in 2010, adding that while in UK, he got married to Czech Republic lady in 2008.

With the success of the first trip, Segun was said to have arranged with Adebisi, a 27-year-old and an ex-staff of Ladtimi Automart Ltd and she paid N1.5 million to him in June 2012 to process her visa and other charges which include passports, medicals and training.

She confessed that the marriage was arranged by Segun sometime last year, and he later booked an appointment for them with the Embassy on June 20, 2013 as husband and wife.

She admitted that Adetokunbo is not her husband adding that it was Segun that lured her into this mess.  She regretted her action and stated that she is novice.

The spokesperson said investigation is ongoing and efforts in top gear to arrest the fleeing Segun and his cohorts, adding that the arrested suspects would be charged to court soonest.
