The Slum2school project, a volunteer based charitable
organization driven by young social reformers to provide scholarship and
psychosocial support for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC’s) in some of the
major slums in Nigeria and across Africa,
has announced the launch of its annual fund raising campaign for 2013
tagged #1000 Voices.
The campaign is geared towards enrolling 1000 kids in 3
communities namely Makoko and Aiyetoru in Yaba Local Government and Emina
community, a remote island in Epe.
The slum2school project was launched in February 2012 and
since then; it has enrolled about 320 children into schools around Lagos. The
project’s founder and Executive Director, Otto Orondaam stated that the last
campaign in the second half of 2012 was geared towards sponsoring and
supporting 200 vulnerable children through basic education, the campaign was a
major success and as a result, a total of 320 kids currently enjoy scholarship
support opportunities courtesy of the slum2school project. “The impact that we
have made in the communities is so amazing, but we realize that we’ve only just
scratched the bark of the tree. The 2013 UNESCO report posited that about 57
Million children of school age in the world are presently out of schools, 10.5
million of those children are in Nigeria alone.
The campaign will run for 30 days and hopes to raise N30
Million Naira for 1000 children at a subsidized cost of N30,000 [Thirty
thousand naira] per child for academic support and complete educational
materials, healthcare insurance and various psychosocial support for a year.
The campaign’s strategic emphasis is on the use of new media
and several social media platforms and the volunteer’s network of friends to
reach its target audience as it did in its last successful campaigns.
