The intricacies surrounding the death of late Damilola Damoche, a 400-level Banking and Finance student of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, is gradually being unraveled as the Lagos State Police Command, yesterday arrested a suspect who had the deceased's mobile phone.
His arrest was necessitated after 34 suspects out of the70 that were initially arrested made confessional statements during interrogation which aided the investigation, thereby linking the phone suspect to the crime.
Following the death of the upcoming hip hop artist, the police had combed the school axis and raided about 70 suspects on Sunday whom they passed through a thorough investigation.
Out of the 70 that were screened by a crack team of detectives from the state Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS),Ikeja, THISDAY gathered that 36 were related while 34 who had a case to answer were detained.
Armed with the confessional statements of the remaining 34, the police quickly acted on their revelations and arrested the phone suspect after storming the school's Ojo Campus in search of him.
Confirming the arrest, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the suspect was arrested based on the confessional statements of those that had already been arrested.
She said the suspect has been transferred to the homicide department of the State Criminal and Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, for further interrogation.
Although reports said some students were killed when the police stormed the campus to arrest the suspect, Braide debunked the news although she admitted that the tension was palpable, adding that no one was killed or injured.
Reports said some of the students had tried to stop the police from arresting the suspect, thereby inciting a clash that allegedly claimed some lives and left others with varying degrees of injuries.
