A midday inferno at the Agbado area of Ogun State, Monday, roasted an 82-year-old grandfather Samuel Adeola and his 12-year-old granddaughter, Mariam Adeola, to death, leaving several others with varying degrees of injuries.
The fire which happened at No. 18, Bailey Street, Agbado, started at about 2pm as a small fire but soon snowballed into an inferno after the cooking stove exploded.
Confirming the incident, the Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasaq Fadipe, said the fire was caused by a cooking stove which was being used by the deceased teenager.
He said, "The fire started when the young girl was cooking in front of their room on the passageway of the four room’s bungalow. In her attempt to refuel the stove, there was an explosion.
"Instead of running out, the girl ran to her grandfather in the room and the fire spread across their room to other parts of the building.
"By the time our men got to the scene, they were already burnt to death. We kick against people cooking on the passageway of the house. It is dangerous. It is also dangerous to refuel generator while it is on.
"People should cook in the kitchen and keep away from home every inflammable substance that could cause fire outbreak."
Also speaking, Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the corpses were removed by policemen from Agbado Police Division and have since been deposited at the public mortuary.
He further called on members of the public to exercise caution with fire especially items that are inflammable.
