Pandemonium erupted yesterday when an early morning fire gutted the power generating room of the popular Ikeja Plaza, opposite Conoil Fuel Station, Ikeja, Lagos. When the explosion rocked the power generating room, it was gathered that pandemonium erupted as both workers and customers in the building at that time panicked as they struggled to flee to safety.
However, it was gathered that there was no loss of live, rather the destruction of the room the fire started from, as the prompt response of the state fire service helped restrict the fire from spreading. Confirming, the incident, the spokesperson, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South-west, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said the fire was contained with the same hour it erupted.
He said, "The power generating room of the Ikeja Plaza exploded at about 10am but the fire service came in immediately and were able to put it out. The fire however did not affect the offices upstairs except the ground floor.
"The building was constructed in such a way that the ground floor held only the car parking lots and the power generating room, so immediately the fire started, our men were deployed to the scene.
"We were able to successfully evacuate the workers and customers in the building without loss of lives while the fire service diligently battled the flames downstairs. "
He said once the fire was put out, the workers in the building went back to work and the daily activities in the building have gone back to normal since none of the officers were affected by the fire.
He however added that the power supply is still down and would remain so until the cause of the initial spark is identified and fixed to prevent a reoccurrence.
