Confusion as 30 Students Faint After Inhaling Gaseous Substance

After inhaling a gaseous chemical substance that engulfed some parts of Ogba suburb in Lagos State, Thursday afternoon, about 30 students of Ogba Junior Grammar School, fainted consecutively, causing confusion to erupt in the school.

While some of the students fainted, others who were quite lucky escaped unhurt as well as the teachers who scampered to safety by closing their nostrils so as not to be affected by the putrid smell.

According to eyewitness report, while some of the students were rushed to Blue Cross Hospital, Ijaiye Road, others were attended to by emergency officials.

Confirming the incident, the Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Razaq Fadipe, said the gaseous substance was traced  to a laboratory located at the Ogba Shopping Arcade, Ijaiye Road, which shares a fence with the affected school.

Debunking claims that the affected students were up to 30 in number, he said only 22 students were rendered unconscious from the effect of inhaling the gaseous substance.

He said, "On getting to the school, 22 students were unconscious. LASAMBUS was able to revive most of them and their parents took them home. Four were not alright and were taken to Blue Cross Hospital. We were able to trace the odour to the complex which shares a fence with the school.

"We spotted the laboratory where the smell was coming from and the place has been cordoned off. Investigations are still on."

As at press time, it was gathered that the four students who were rushed to Blue Cross Hospital have since been revived and transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), for close monitoring.
