EXCLUSIVE: Police Arrest Teenager, Three Others for Pipeline Vandalism

The Lagos State Command of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism has arrested four suspected pipeline vandals including a 15-year old boy, Sani Musa for pipeline vandalism.
The other suspects who were identified as Chibuzor Okorie, Sani Musa, Musa Adamu and Aminu Suleiman were arrested with 200 kegs of 50 litres of diesel which was allegedly siphoned from Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline in Shagamu area of Ogun state.
Confirming the arrest, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Friday Ibadin, who is in charge of the task force, said the suspects were intercepted and arrested on October 17, 2013, along Shagamu, Ibadan Expressway, on their way to sell the stolen diesel.
He said, “Police acted on a tip off that Charles Okorie and his cohorts were operating at the NNPC pipeline in Sagamu. Policemen led by Sector Commander, DSP Onaghise Osayande were sent to the area and they successfully combed them out.
“We were able to recover the truck with registration number KMC111XW. I applaud the boldness of community leaders who are currently assisting security personnel to fish out other vandals especially in Sagamu axis.
“Crime fighting is a collective responsibility and we call on all Nigerians to assist security personnel to fish out all those within their community that are into pipeline vandalism. The suspects would be charged to court at the end of the investigation.”
In his confessional statement, the 15-year-old Sani said he ventured into the illicit business due to his quest for a better life, adding that it was his relative, one Alhaji Sherrif that introduced him to the business.
He however said he never joined them to vandalise pipelines, rather, his job was to stand by the roadside and watch out for security personnel and alert them if need be.
